The University of Idaho Analytical Sciences Laboratory (ASL) is a full-service laboratory that operates within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Their staff of scientists, technicians, and support personnel is committed to providing the highest quality analytical and research services to universities, government agencies and contractors, non-profit organizations, the clinical veterinary community, and agricultural producers. Offering over 200 different tests, the laboratory analyzes approximately 20,000 samples each year for a broad spectrum of target compounds in a wide variety of matrices. Supporting the activities of university scientists, the Cooperative Extension System, veterinarians, as well as state and regional agencies, ASL has five analytical services: Water Quality, Soil Chemical and Physical Analyses, Plant Chemical Analyses, Environmental Monitoring and Veterinary Diagnostic Toxicology.
Their Challenge
ASL’s previous LIMS was outdated. It was based on a proprietary database, therefore the ability to expand and accommodate new and different analyses was limited. In addition to more flexibility, ASL was searching for a system that would provide better data and reporting. Their two core requirements when searching for a new LIMS were 1) reliability and 2) that it could handle a wide variety of procedures yet not be so complicated that a full-time IT staff was required for implementation, support and maintenance.

Sample Master is a state-of-the-art LIMS that automates the process of ensuring data integrity by limiting access to data to authorized users. Sample Master LIMS contains integrated workflow management which produces compliant electronic records at each of the laboratory workflow steps and automatically links related information to produce a traceability matrix surrounding results.
Additionally, Sample Master provides the ability for ASL users to set up departments that the sample must go through for their laboratory with the ability to replace screen captions with captions that reflect the laboratory’s terminology, accelerating full implementation. The LIMS does not require source code or custom code modification to support lab specific configuration and workflow requirements.
